Ideas for Use

*Unable to begin in June 2020? Scroll to the bottom of the page for ideas to start on another date*

While developed for home use, this can easily be adapted for in-person, congregational use, virtual small groups, etc.

Individual Use:
Use this as your weekly Bible Study. We do think that the Bible is best experienced in community, so consider asking a friend or two to meet with you virtually to talk about the story.

Household Use:
Find a regular weekly time to read and explore the story around a meal, then do the household project following the meal. Or maybe you want to have one big night a month, where you explore four stories together.

Full Church Use:
Particularly for smaller congregations, this could be done as an all-church series. Perhaps each household or small group does their own project, or maybe you can even do one collaborative project as a church. This could potentially guide your communal worship, but it can also be done in place of Sunday School or Wednesday night activities.

Children's Sunday School:
Formatting this in a children's Sunday School hour could look something like this:
  • Gathering and singing time - 10 min
  • Snack, sharing and prayer - 15 min
  • Tell/read the story and choose a couple prompts to guide wondering questions and conversations - 10 min
  • Project (either do one collaborative project as a class, or supply art materials, dress-up clothes, and building materials for the children to do their own projects) - 15 min
  • Play - 10 min

Youth or Adult Sunday School:
Tell/read the story together, the choose a couple of the prompts to discuss. Do a collaborative project, or provide supplies for individual projects.

Hybrid Home and Sunday School:
Encourage the households of the congregation to utilize this at home. When your congregation is able to meet in person, use it for Sunday School as well. This allows you to keep something constant while so much is in flux.

What if I want to start this later in the year?
You can begin this at any point in the year, but beginning in June does make the weeks line up nicely with the church year. If you begin in September, for example, and want to study Jesus' birth at Christmas, there are a few ways you could do this.
  • Marathon-style: Do one big week of watching all the videos to catch up on the story. Do your project in parts instead of stories so that you can catch up.
  • Learn in parts instead of smaller stories: Do one part per week, which will gradually catch you up. You could watch the video summaries of all the stories in Part 1, for example, the choose one story that you want to dig into for your conversation and project.
  • Learn the big song and jump right in! To create the songs, Jonathan boiled the stories down to their essence, so singing the song can catch you up sufficiently to continue the year. If you want to do more in-depth work with each story later, you can always do that as the year comes around again. But the songs will help you learn the chronological story.
