What is this?
A home-based, all-age, flexible resource for individuals and churches who want to learn and explore the biblical story. |
Our Story
The resources of God’s Story, God’s Song were born in spring 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two pastors scrambling to write flexible resources teamed up with a couple of collaborative, theologically-minded artists to create something that could bring our church together in a scattered time. Addie jumped in to make the creation something shareable and usable, and we realized it wouldn’t be hard to make the resource available beyond our congregation. So that’s what we did. Our first collaboration was the massive “This is the Story…” We’re a scrappy outfit, creating resources quickly and trusting that God’s at work in it all.

The Songs
These songs have been a fantastic discovery in faith formation for participants! The music speaks to our hearts. The artist can make discoveries that elude the theologian. They open up a story without needing to give it a moral. And they’re a great memory device. A young child can quickly tell you 52 stories from the Bible after doing “This is the Story…,” because the Big Song from that series prompts the memories. |

Unique Methodology
This is a resource that can work for people of any age and level of knowledge. Our “This is the Story…” series captured the imagination of a 3-year-old who loved to sing, and was equally (but differently) inspiring for an adult with a doctorate in ministry. We think the key for that was a methodology we like to sum up with the reminder, “Don’t put a bow on it.” Here are some of the key components:

Resources
Each resource we create will be a little different, but here are the basic components:
Each resource we create will be a little different, but here are the basic components:
- Central Scripture: We start with the Bible. We explore the Bible. We sing the Bible. Each session gives a passage to read from the Bible. A bare-bones summary of the story is also included.
- Put it in Context: In each session, there is a reminder of how this particular story fits into the big narrative of the Bible.
- Prime the Pump: Interesting tidbits, background information, and things to think about. Choose a few to focus your reading and conversation.
- Microsong: A very short song that explores the session’s story.
- Macrosong: Throughout the series, the microsongs will build into a longer song that tells the fuller picture of the collection of stories.
- Household Project: An optional way to continue exploration of the story.
Hear what others say:
I love the Bible. I've read through the Bible before, and studied many of its books and passages, both prayerfully and academically. But this past year, reading through the weekly Bible passages while connecting to the "big story," listening to the "microsongs," engaging the "big song" and meeting with two other adults to discuss our questions and insights has been a tremendous blessing. I encountered Scripture in a new way. The yearlong journey was well worth it, and I come away a more grateful, humble servant of Jesus even more enamored with the Story of God and God's people.
When the pandemic shut down in-person worship services and Sunday School I was anxious to find a bible resource we could use at home. I was skeptical and a little overwhelmed about getting started, but when I heard my children singing the opening phrases to the big story song around the house I decided it was time to jump in. The use of story, song, and project has been a powerful teaching combination. Our whole family has gained a better understanding of the big story of the bible and our place in that story.
